This list is a great starting point for anyone considering renovating or extending their home. The answers will contain much of the information that your architect or builder will need to know and will help you clarify your own thoughts on the matter.

1. What do you like about your current home?
2. What do you dislike about your current home?
3. Do you want to extend or change the space you have? Or both? Why?
4. If you are extending, what function(s) do you want the new space to have?
5. Are you prepared to go through the planning process?
6. Describe your lifestyle. Do you spend a lot of time at home? Do you entertain often? Do guests stay over often? Are you planning to have (more) children?
7. How much time do you spend in each of the rooms of your home?
8. What new spaces do you need?
9. What style of architecture and interior design do you like?
10. What style is the existing house? Do you want to change this?
11. What style do you want the extension to be?
12. Is sustainable development and increased energy efficiency important to you?
13. How long do you intend to stay in your finished home?
14. Have you future-proofed your plans?
15. Do you need to consider mobility or age- related issues (for yourself or anyone else who might be staying in the house)?
16. Will you be living in the house while the work is being done?
17. What is your budget?
18. When would you like to start and/or finish work?
19. Who will be the primary contact for the professionals involved in your project?
20. How involved (or not) do you want to be in the project?
